The Importance of ADA Compliance

The basis for accessibility requirements is the Federal Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990(ADA). The ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the public.

There are over 54 millions Americans who have a disability. That’s nearly 19% or one in every five residents and growing.

Florida and federal law require compliance with accessibility standards for places of public accommodation and commercial facilities.

The Florida Building Code (FBC) has many requirements on accessible routes. Amongst many of the FBC requirements, one common ADA necessity is ramp compliance.

Ramps runs shall have a running slope not steeper than 1:12. Refer to table 405.2 of the FBC for exceptions due to space limitations.

To accommodate the widest range of users, provide ramps with the least possible running slope, and wherever possible, accompany ramps with stairs for use by those individuals for whom distance presents a greater barrier than steps (ex: people with heart disease or limited stamina).
